Even though it was chilly and gray for much of the holiday weekend where I live, summer has unofficially rolled into town. Here’s a quick list of what I’m looking forward to
Longer days–Living in California, we have no weather to speak of, only fire season and a smattering of earthquakes to break up our sunny weather. So, daylight savings time is always a big deal to me. I love the days getting longer in summer, more time to hang out and enjoy time with the people you love. Even if you’re busy at work, the longer days give you the chance to catch a sunset or take a walk outside after work is done, something you miss out on in fall and winter.
BBQs – I love cooking outside when the weather gets hot. Nothing like throwing some meat and veggies on the grill and enjoying the breeze while your food cooks!
Ice Cream – Not that you need a reason to eat ice cream ever, but for those that do, staying cool on a hot day is a perfect excuse for enjoying a scoop of your favorite flavor.
No School – School isn’t a drag just for kids. Lunch prep, volunteering at school, homework and class projects aren’t any fun for the parents either. Just like the kids, parents everywhere are looking for a break from school obligations and pretending they understand word problems.
Gardening – I enjoy being outside all year round, but I love working in the garden in the summer when everything is green and blooming!
Water Balloon Fights –During the pandemic, we broke up the days with water balloon fights. It was silly, fun and gave us a break from the stress of what was going on. But as things got back to normal, we stopped. Now that summer’s back I’m planning on bringing back the water balloon fights. I’m queen of the surprise attack…
Fruit –Summer is the best time of year for fruit. Plums, peaches, berries, watermelon – you name it and you’ll probably find it in my shopping cart over the summer. A ripe peach to me just tastes like summer
The Song Of The Summer– Every summer has it’s anthem and I can’t wait to find out what this summer’s viral hit will be. While it sucks if you can’t stand the song (“Summer Girls” by LFO made 1999 a particularly long summer), “Call Me Maybe” Or “I’ve Got A Feeling” take you right back to those summer days of the past. My fingers are crossed that this year’s anthem is a good one!
The Beach – Spending hours on the shore, swimming, hanging out with friends…sand in your sandwich, the smell of sunscreen and salty hair – what’s not to love about the beach? It’s the only time as an adult where I’m expected to sit for hours and not do anything. I love that as a mom I’m required to go to the beach several times a week. My son thinks it’s so he can play with his friends, but it’s really because I love being able to kick back with friends and hang out for a few hours. Shh, don’t tell my husband!
Every Hour is Happy Hour! I don’t know if it’s the warm weather, fewer deadlines or remembering that feeling of freedom we felt during our summer vacations, but it seems that every hour is happy hour during the summer! People seem more inclined to gather outside together, share a coffee or a cocktail and relax. Nothing beats a leisurely hangout with friends over cocktails or mocktails. It’s the perfect opportunity to catch up with old friends and enjoy yourself.
