- Autumn Leaves – the flaming colors, the satisfying crunch, the heady fragrance (which is actually caused by the release of release of gas as the leaf dies – eww) We don’t get a lot of changing leaves here in Orange County, CA but I love the few that I can find.
- Oktoberfest – I can’t think of a better way to spend a September Saturday than with an ice cold beer, a plate of brats and sauerkraut and a singing a chorus of Zicke Zacke Zicke Zacke Hoi Hoi Hoi!
- Sweaters – I have a stack of cute sweaters just waiting for that first Fall chill. Haven’t felt it yet, but hoping cold weather is just around the corner.
- Decorating Season Begins – Starting with Halloween, our house will be festooned from now until January 7thwith all manner of twinkle lights, lawn ornaments and garland imaginable. We go all out for each holiday and probably have more tombstones, turkeys and Santas that is considered healthy for a household of three. But the whole family gets into decorating and it’s a great time to remember previous year’s holiday fun and look forward to the coming season of celebrations.
- My birthday – Believe it or not, I still get excited about my birthday. Cake, birthday cards in my mail box and a legitimate excuse to treat myself to some new books – why wouldn’t I be excited? Yes, it means I am getting older, but considering the alternative (death), I’ll gladly add another candle on my cake. Anyone who complains about getting older is just looking at things all wrong.
- Halloween – Ghost stories, trick or treating, haunted houses and all that candy! I think Halloween is one of the best holidays we’ve got and I’ll take any excuse I can get to dress up.
- Trader Joe’s Fall Casserole Recipe – I discovered this amazing recipe one day while I was grocery shopping. (Remember when Trader Joes used to offer free cooked samples? Ahh, those were the days…) I love making this dish when the weather gets cooler. It’s easy, a crowd pleaser and freezes beautiful. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
- The Light – The golden quality of light in September and October is magical to me, casting everything I see in a rich and abundant glow. (It’s the result of the tilt of the earth on its axis as we orbit the sun after the summer solstice) I’ll skip the weak light of winter and the glaring blast of summer sun for the golden bars of autumn sun every time.
- New Horror Films – Being a scary movie junkie, another reason why I love Autumn is that with Halloween looming, September usually means a slew of new horror films will be released. Smile, Mr. Harrington’s Phone, The Invitation, The Menu, Pearl, Significant Other are just a few to the new releases that I can’t wait to watch from behind my splayed fingers
- Knitting – I am not a fancy knitter, but I make great blankets. I love starting a project at this time of year. As the weather cools, my blanket grows longer and keeps me cozy while I work.

Happy Fall!🍁
I love autumn leaves! I’m looking forward to hiking and hearing the “crunch” you mentioned.
