This week I celebrate a milestone birthday as I turn fifty. 🥳 And I have to be honest with you, other than ticking a new box on government forms and getting inundated with unsolicited fliers from AARP in the mail, this birthday doesn’t feel much different from any other birthday.
I remember what fifty used to look like when I was a kid – tons of wrinkles, a helmet of permed hair and a long list of activities and foods you could no longer enjoy.
But these days fifty genuinely does appear to just be a number and I’m not letting a meaningless number dictate my life.
Sure, I probably won’t be joining a roller derby team (something I actually considered when we moved to San Clemente before I realized just how klutzy I am and how high the percentage would be of a broken nose), but I don’t really see my age preventing me from chasing my dreams and living my best life.
So what’s on deck for this quinquagenarian (look it up😉)? Here’s a little peak:
Writing, writing and more writing – As I wrote about in my last blog, I have a long list of projects I want to work on (maybe even some television scripts if things go well). I’ll be logging many hours in front of my trusty pink-glitter laptop, building worlds and creating characters. Eventually, I’d love to gain a wider readership, so I can spend less time marketing my books and more time writing. But I keep reminding myself Rome wasn’t built in a day…
Travel – As I discovered during my recent trip to Greece, the world didn’t fall apart while I was out of town. More importantly, I was able to hit the reset button on things I was stressing about and come back with a more positive attitude. While every trip won’t be half-way around the world, I think more frequent getaways will be healthy for my overall mindset as well as inspire my writing.
Celebrate More – I really want to celebrate everything more. Not only my big accomplishments and those of my family, friends but also just making it through a particularly rough day or week. Celebrating is just another way to appreciate what one has, and I know I am at my best when I am grateful. I want to take time out of my busy schedule to take a deep breath and appreciate our blessings, our success or not screaming at the customer service rep who kept me on hold for an hour. There are victories everywhere if you look hard enough and they deserve a moment of recognition.
Flexibility – In both senses of the word. I am shockingly inflexible. Yes I can touch my toes, but I could definitely do some work on being more limber. It’s good for the body and it’s also good for the mind. Being less rigid and being open to new possibilities and changes in my schedule or plans is something I always need to work on. What better time for both than turning fifty!
So join me this week in a glass of champagne, eat a piece of cake, or maybe try to touch your toes. Celebrate your own milestone achievement with me. Cheers to both of us.🥂
Happy Tuesday🎂
